Caramel Earl Grey Tea (Vegan)

Caramel Earl Grey Tea (Vegan)

A warm mug of caramel earl grey tea to curl up with before the holidays arrive. Or during the holidays would be even better. It’s delicious, just sweet enough and super simple to make. Pair it with a scone or spiced muffin, and you’re in business.

All you need is some sugar, plantbased milk and earl grey tea! In tea bags or loose, they both work. I used loose leaf tea since it’s what I had.

The amount of sugar will depend on how sweet you want your tea and if you’re using sweetened or unsweetened milk. Since it’s caramelized, the drink won’t be sickly sweet even if you decide to add the higher amount. It’s just personnal preference at that point.

Caramel

Some variations to this caramel earl grey tea

You can froth some milk if you have a frother to make a kind of london fog-esque drink. I’m not a coffee drinker so I don’t have one (yet) because I never needed it, but I have to admit it would’ve been great for this caramel earl grey tea. And future drinks too probably.

Earl Grey

I read that a good alternative if you want frothed milk is to warm it and shake it up in a jar. It would obviously be more of a very loose foam, but it was worth a shot.

Well, after many dirtied jars, I can confirm it does not work with plain ol’ almond milk. It looked exactly as you’d expect shaken up milk to look like. Slightly bubbly. That’s about it. Maybe because it was a plantbased milk. Perhaps a vegan barista milk blend might work, but honestly I would just stick to a frother.

Caramel Earl Grey

Another good variation to this would be to add some floral flavourings instead of the vanilla (or in addition to it, why not) like rose water, a little bit of lavender or orange blossom water would be delicious as well!

Total Time 15 minutes
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 2-3 tbsp white granulated sugar, depending on how sweet you want it and if you’re using sweetened or unsweetened milk
  • 580 g or 2½ cups plantbased milk, I used unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tsp loose leaf earl grey tea , or two tea bags
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or paste

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, heat up the sugar on medium heat until it’s a deep amber colour. Keep an eye on it because that small quantity burns easily.
  • Take it off the heat, add your milk and earl grey then bring it to a simmer while stirring to dissolve the caramel.
  • Once it simmers, take it off the heat, stir in the vanilla and strain the tea out or remove the tea bags. That’s it!

Notes

  • You can top your tea with frothed milk if you’d like.
  • You can also add a bit of lavender, rose water or orange blossom water to it.
